What a general practice solicitor does.

A general practice solicitor is the high-street firm most people use first: wills and probate, buying and selling a home, family matters, employment problems, small disputes and advice to local businesses. The value is in knowing you and your circumstances across the years, spotting when a matter needs a specialist, and referring you to one. All solicitors are regulated by the SRA, hold professional indemnity insurance, and are subject to the same rules on client money and complaints whatever the size of the firm.

When you need one

You need a will, a power of attorney or help with a relative's estate.
You are buying or selling a home.
You have a dispute with a neighbour, a trader or an employer and want to know where you stand.
You run a small business and want a solicitor you can call before problems become expensive.

How fees usually work

General practice firms publish fixed fees for conveyancing, wills, probate and some other work under the SRA Transparency Rules, and charge by the hour for disputes and advice. Many offer a free or fixed-fee first meeting. Ask for the client care letter and the costs information in writing, and check the firm's complaints procedure and Legal Ombudsman details.

How do I check a solicitor is genuine?

Search the Solicitors Register on the SRA website for the individual and the firm. A regulated firm must display its SRA number and the SRA digital badge on its website, and holds professional indemnity insurance. Never send money to a bank account notified by email without telephoning the firm on a number you have verified.

What if I am unhappy with my solicitor?

Complain to the firm first under its written complaints procedure; it has eight weeks to resolve the complaint. If it does not, or you are still dissatisfied, you can take the complaint to the Legal Ombudsman within a year. Concerns about dishonesty or misconduct go to the SRA.

Can I get free legal advice?

Legal aid covers some family, housing, debt, immigration and community care matters if you qualify financially. Citizens Advice, law centres and university law clinics give free advice, and many solicitors offer a free first consultation. Some insurance policies and trade union memberships include legal expenses cover.
